August Good News

The August edition of Good News is now available to download.

Many in the church at home are discouraged by the decline in the size and influence of the church. Whilst there are many encouragements that God is still working to save and sanctify, there is certainly a need for reformation within the wider church in Scotland. Dr Tim Donachie’s piece considers the fact that Scotland is now a majority irreligious country, at least according to the last census. The front cover picture is perhaps symbolic of the problem: the ruins of the Caledonia Road church in Glasgow (an Alexander “Greek” Thomson building) and the same is true of the picture on page three: the former Edinburgh Reformed Presbyterian Church, now sadly Frakenstein’s Pub! Since the same census also shows that Islam has more than doubled, Rev. Konteh’s article will be useful as we consider how to engage with Muslim neighbours.

The interview for this edition is a little different than normal. We have interviewed four institutions in one go: the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary (USA), Reformed Theological College (Northern Ireland), Kobe Theological Hall (Japan), and the Reformed Presbyterian Seminary (Canada). We are expressly exhorted to pray that the Lord of the harvest would thrust out labourers to preach the Gospel faithfully and pastor the flock. I hope that the interview will enable us to do that more effectively.

In the same vein, Dr Nathan Eshelman’s third article on key church leaders from the early church teaches us lessons about preaching from the life and witness of John Chrysostom.
